The wave of protests that shook Iran following the killing of Mahsa-Jina Amini in police custody for “improper hijab”, represent the most direct threat to the theocratic dictatorship installed in Iran since its inception in 1979. Faced with an unprecedented popular mobilisation targeting the patriarchal and authoritarian foundations of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the regime responded with the only instruments it only knows too well: brutal repression and unrelenting propaganda.
Yet despite the deadly crackdown on the protests – led by women and historically marginalised groups in Kurdistan and Balochistan – the revolutionary uprising embodied by the slogan “Woman, life, freedom” continues to reshape society and politics in Iran, as the struggle for liberation from theocratic rule in Iran unfolds in multiple forms. This project is dedicated to commentary and analysis of domestic and international developments related to the ongoing revolutionary uprising in Iran.
